What CPS Is / What CPS Does

What They Provide: Child Protective Services is part of Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families. CPS receives and reviews reports of suspected child abuse or neglect, assesses child safety, investigates when legally required, and may connect families with services to reduce risk and strengthen safety at home. CPS does not automatically remove children from their families when a report is made. When safe and appropriate, the goal is to help families stabilize, address safety concerns, and keep children safely with their parents or caregivers. Some reports may be closed if they do not meet the legal definition of abuse or neglect, some may be assigned for investigation, and some lower-risk reports may be handled through Family Assessment Response instead of a traditional investigation.
Website: dcyf.wa.gov/services/child-welfare-system/cps
Phone: Child Abuse / Neglect Reporting Hotline: 866-ENDHARM; 866-363-4276
Address: Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families; local offices vary
Hours of Operation: Child abuse and neglect reporting hotline available 24 hours a day
Appointment / Referral Required: No appointment required to make a report; CPS involvement depends on intake screening and legal criteria
Documents Needed: No documents required to make a report; helpful information includes child’s name, age, location, parent/caregiver information, safety concerns, known injuries, known immediate danger, and how to contact the reporter if follow-up is needed
Application Process: Call the reporting hotline if there is concern that a child is being abused, neglected, or is unsafe. If there is immediate danger, call 911 first.
Eligibility: Anyone can make a report if they are concerned about child abuse or neglect. Some professionals are mandated reporters under Washington law.
Cost: Free
Insurance / Medicaid / Medicare: Not applicable
Service Area: Washington State
Languages / Accessibility: Interpreter services and accessibility accommodations may be available; call to request support
Important Notes: CPS is not meant to be used as a threat or punishment. It exists to assess child safety. Removal from the home is generally not the first step unless a child cannot be kept safe in the current situation. Family Assessment Response may be used for some lower-risk screened-in reports and focuses on child safety while working with the family.
